Christian-Muslim Youth Statement on Climate Change

Copenhagen is just under a month away and we are aiming to get 1000 signatures.  Currently, we have just over 60 signatures. There are over 1200 people on the Forum's mailing list so please sign up here. Here are some ideas to help us get more signatures:
  • take the statement to your mosque/church/community group; get the statement presented in some way (e.g. after khutbah, Sunday service etc) and then have a sheet for people to sign up to the statement
  • hold a local Advent/Eid event with a focus on the environment and climate change as well as Christian and Muslim messages about preparation and sacrifice

Swedish Inter Faith visit to Leicester

Last week the St Philip's Centre hosted young Swedes from Gothenburg sampling how faith communities contribute to the life of Leicester. The project, part-funded by the EU's Youth Exchanges programme and Leicester City Council, followed a visit from 32 faith leaders and civic dignatories to the Centre in June 2009. The visit lasted from 25 October to 1 November and equipped young people to become faith community advocates. 12 young people visited to find out more about the city and its many faiths. The visitors were Christian, Jewish and Muslim, and met with Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and Muslims. Through joint workshops, field studies and exposures to new contexts, there was a chance to challenge each others' understandings and attitudes towards themselves, the society where both partners live, and European society as a whole.

Canon Dr Andrew Wingate, Director of St. Philip's said, 'This was a groundbreaking visit and firmly puts St Philip's Centre and Leicester on the map at an international level. Many friendships and connections were made and I hope that next year a group of young people from Leicester will visit Gothenburg to continue this excellent partnership'. Philip Akiva Ashton, a member of the Jewish faith from Gothenburg added, 'This week has been great to meet other people the same age as me but from different cultural and religious backgrounds and also having the opportunity to make friends with people I would not normally get the opportunity too.'
