Mercy, compassion and love in Christianity and Islam

Speakers:

Sheikh Mohammad Ali Shomali, Director of the Islamic Centre of England*

Reverend Maggie Hindley; Co-Director of the London Inter Faith Centre**

Robin Marsh; Secretary General of Universal Peace Foundation***

Mahera Ruby; Researcher at Goldsmith University

The present turbulent world appears to be heading to be heading towards the wilderness of conflict, hate and mistrust. For centuries advocates of religious values and doctrines have been promoting noble values and a culture of peaceful co-existence with adherents of other religions, despite the wars that were often given religious justifications. Despite St Augustine’s relentless work on laying the principles of “just war” in order to de-legitimise unnecessary and unethical conflicts, there remains visible absence of the culture of compassion, love and mercy. How can we establish a society of peace and love while evil is establishing foothold in our communities? How can people of religion disseminate the values of mercy and compassion to defeat those of exclusion and takfir?

Prayers for the Middle East   4pm - 5.15pm

The multiple and deepening crises in the Middle East are a huge cause for concern.  The conflict in Iraq appears to be escalating, and the tragedies unfolding in Syria are leading to an ever worsening refugee crisis.  Alongside this, the impact of the conflict in Gaza continues with many people left bereaved, injured or homeless.
Many people are suffering greatly and our prayers are very much needed at this time.

In collaboration with the Christian Muslim Forum and the London Inter Faith Centre, St Ethelburga's will be offering space for sharing (using the open listening method), for spoken prayers from different traditions, and for a period of 15 minutes silent meditation.
